LFW 2017: Uber-Feminine And Wearable Silhouettes At Karn Malhotra
One of the biggest achievement for a designer is to find a negotiable ground between his expression of art and pragmatism. While OTT ensembles grace the runway well, the collection that appeals the most is one that is equal parts runway worthy and wearable, as was exhibited by designer Karn Malhotra. Inspired by summer blooms such as lilies, daffodils, and blue forget-me-nots (as was visible in his colour palette), Malhotra presented his SR17 collection titled, ‘Bloom,’ at the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2017. Given that flowers formed Karn’s inspiration, we were obviously expecting floral motifs to find their way into the garments. We, however, were in for a very refreshing surprise.
Actress Amyra Dastur of Mr X, and very recently, Kungfu Yoga fame turned show stopper for Karn. The diva sported an asymmetrical, two-tone, blue gown in a lush shimmery fabric. The wrapped drape structured over a mini and transitioning into a flowy skirt made for a very dreamy silhouette.
Dastur sashayed the gown down the runway sporting herself on a pair of killer strappy heels. The bling of the ensemble was perfectly balanced out with minimal makeup and simple left down hair.
Karn Malhotra is not one to go with the flow, the designer believes in writing his own rules than following seasonal trends, or so suggests his work. Last summer, while the rest of the world was busy playing the field with bold motifs, Karn brought in fun, colourful and youthful stripes (remember that awesome suit Jacqueline Fernandez wore). While stripes, checks, florals and anti-fits ruled the runways this season, Karn, once again presented a collection that was an edge above the other in many ways, and yet not without the reflection of the designer’s obsession with femininity as a design aesthetic.
With ruffles, tiers and frills taking centre stage, the ‘Bloom,’ simply put, was all things feminine offering a diverse range of sleek silhouettes to choose from. Clean cuts and fluid forms of short evening dresses, jumpsuits, separates jackets, button-down dresses, straight pants and gowns made for a nice and eclectic assortment in a range of nature-inspired colours like white and powder and aqua blue, flaming orange and shades of deep forest green.
TBH, we were in half minds over the showstopping number that Amyra donned and the tiered white crop top and skirt set. But its irresistible summery vibe and sheer wearability made the matching separates the clear winner.
